StationWatch

UK Fuel Finder API Status

StationWatch gets its fuel price data from the UK Government's Fuel Finder API (fuel-finder.service.gov.uk), operated by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). The API launched in early 2025 under the Motor Fuel Price (Open Data) Regulations 2025, which require all UK fuel retailers to report their pump prices electronically. We fetch prices every 30 minutes.

What is the Fuel Finder API?

The Fuel Finder API is the UK Government's official source of live fuel prices. Under the Motor Fuel Price (Open Data) Regulations 2025, every fuel retailer in the UK — from supermarket forecourts to independent garages — must report their pump prices to DESNZ within 30 minutes of any change. The data covers petrol (E10, E5), diesel (B7), super diesel, B10, and HVO across approximately 8,000 filling stations.

Why does the API go down?

The Fuel Finder API experiences periodic outages, typically returning 503 Service Unavailable on the OAuth authentication endpoint. These outages tend to occur on weekends and evenings (UK time) and can last anywhere from a few hours to several days. During an outage, StationWatch continues to display the most recently fetched prices — they may be a few hours or days old until the API recovers.

We have no control over the API's availability. If you're seeing stale prices on StationWatch, this page will tell you why.

How we fetch data

Our ingest worker runs every 30 minutes via a Cloudflare Workers cron trigger. Each run authenticates with the API, fetches all station metadata and current prices in batches, and writes the results to our database. We track price changes over time and compute city-level averages, trends, and rankings.

For developers

If you're building with the Fuel Finder API and experiencing the same outages, you're not alone. The API does not publish an official status page. This page serves as an unofficial, community-run status monitor. The official API documentation is at fuel-finder.service.gov.uk.
